A sundial for the evening hours

The sundial described earlier in this column (A new private sundial at Geldrop. august 2003) doesn't function during the evening hours, because it is oriented almost to the south. Therefore I made a second sundial which is mounted on the west wall of our garage at a distance of about eight metres from the first one.

The range of its time scale is from 16:30 to 21:00 MEZT (MEZT is DST for CET).
The latest sunset during the year is at about 22:00 MEZT, but the sun then disappears somewhat more than an hour earlier behind the neighbouring houses. That's why the scale ends at 21:00 MEZT.

As regards design and information this sundial is quite analogous to the former one: a brown panel, lines and figures in green and yellow and the information on the edges in black. The only essential difference is the declination, which in this case is 82.7°.

The stylus of this sundial points freely into space. When you look along it during twilight, when both the stylus and the brightest stars are visible, you see Polaris.
