Year 2005
What could be nicer than to use Time in a souvenir?
A (small) sundial lends itself splendidly
This idea led to this beautiful 9 x 7cm (3½" x 2¾") box.
The dial is made of stone with gold inlay. The box itself is also made of gold.
The sundial indicates local apparent time.
The date line is for 10 July, the birthday of the receiver of the box.
On that day, the shadow of the style tip moves along this line.
The sundial box is made for Aerdenhout, where the receiver lives.
Left is a cock, representing the start of the day. Noon has a bird on the wing, 18 hours an owl.
The compass rose shows how to orient the box.
Inside the box is a dedication in gold inlay and a portrait of the giver.
