The octagonal sundial itself is made of silver, the pedestal of ebony.
The compass is housed in a gilded compass chamber.
The sundial provides for two time systems: apparent solar time and central European time.
Seven date lines, for the twelve signs of the zodiac, indicate the date.
Around the compass is a scale according to the zodiac indicating the equation of time.
