The design sketch shows the almost-west dial that Jacob Borsje made for his house in 1986.
The sundial motto EIGENWYZER is a play on words. Its literal meaning is “my own dial”, but it may also be read as “pigheaded”. (In Dutch: eigenwijs.)
Jacob Borsje writes:
"Eigenwyzer" because I have calculated and built it all by myself.
"Eigenwyzer" because it keeps a time different from everyone else’s.
"Eigenwyzer" because it was built for the coordinates of my wall only.
And to accentuate its "eigenwijsheid" (pigheadedness), I spell it with Y instead of modern Dutch IJ.
The sundial has:
- lines for winter time
- date lines, according to the zodiac
- azimuth lines from south to west-north-west.
The photograph shows the sundial in full splendour after its 2004 facelift.
On that occasion, all brass parts were gilded.
The worked edges of the style plate and the ball index make for a playful shadow image.
The dial is embellished with brass flowers around the fixing points, and with beautiful wrought iron in two corners.
