Inclining sundial

Krimpen aan de Lek

An octagonal metal dial face, inclining 11 degrees, rests on an elegant ironwork base.
The sundial reads local apparent time to the hour and half-hour.
The hours are indicated by overlaid bronze roman numerals.
A table on the edge of the sundial lists the total longitude and equation-of-time adjustment, in minutes, to be applied to the readout.

A plaque on the sundial shows that housing association “Ons Belang”, on their 75th anniversary in 1994, presented the sundial to the town of Nederlek.

The style triangle shows the sawn-out shape of a whale. A whale also features in the town’s coat of arms, and in the church tower’s wind vane: there used to be a whaling fleet here.
