Vertical declining sundial

Dordrecht

On a wall of Cronenburch House, in Dordrecht, there is a stone, west declining, vertical sundial.
This sundial was installed directly after the construction of the house in 1906-1907.
There are hour lines from 10 to 5 (17) only, probably because of shadows from surrounding buildings.
A part of the sundial is painted in colour. The motto reads I count the bright hours only.

In 1992, the sundial – overgrown by the grapevine and lacking its gnomon – was restored.
De Zonnewijzerkring member Jacob Borsje recalculated, manufactured, and installed a new style triangle.
Dordrecht painter C. van Heyningen took care of the paintwork and the gilding of style and hour lines.

The new gnomon is a style triangle with sawn-out characters “Cr”.
