In the Netherlands there are some sundials which consist of a cube close to ground, and high over it an armillary sphere.
The specimen shown here is currently in Scheemda, but was earlier in Haren, in the province of Groningen.
The cube has four simple sundials which are aimed towards the cardinal points north, east, south and west.
The east and west dials both have date lines for the beginning of summer and winter, as well as a horizon, but the pole styles have no corresponding nodi.
The original armillary sphere had disappeared by mischief, but a replica now graces this special sundial.
The equatorial ring and polar caps are not made out of flat material, but are actual parts of a spherical surface.
