Late April 2009, the Public Welfare Educational Society gave this armillary sundial to the town of Loppersum.
The sundial was placed in front of the new town hall.
In this armillary sphere, several kinds of rings are present. Their names may be found in
Article of the month April 2003
In addition, there are two polar ‘caps’ serving as equatorial sundials.
The central equatorial ring has hour numerals on the inside that show time.
But on the outside of this band are four small additional semicircular equatorial sundials, each with its own gnomon.
And the edges of these hour scales, in their turn, serve as gnomons for four pyramid shapes on the equatorial ring.
A earlier example of this type of armillary sphere is shown in
Article of the month October 2006
The one shown there even has a second armillary on top, and has two ecliptic rings.
