Year 2003
In countries like Austria, Italy, Germany and Spain, we often see the most beautiful murals on houses and other buildings, and sundials there are often likewise furnished.
In The Netherlands, we are not usually so exuberant, but such a sundial on a house in Weert is now a few years old.
We will introduce it to you now.
In the painting, the elements sand and water, yellow and blue, flowers and fish receive much attention.
They are suggestive of the names of the former owners (v.d. Zanden en Maree) (which translate loosely as Sands and Mariner).
The four seasons, too, have their place in the painting, and astronomical symbols adorn the centre.
The sundial is arranged for standard and summer time with two sets of numerals for the hour lines.
The outermost date lines indicate the start of winter and summer, while the inner two represent the birthdays of the married couple.
A vertical line marks apparent noon.
