Sundial of the month April

Chimney dials

Former courthouse ‘Gravensteen’, Leiden.

The two chimneys of the former courthouse ‘Gravensteen’ in Leiden carry two sundials each, so that no less than four sundials are to be seen here.
There is a south (almost) dial on each chimney, one complemented by an east (almost) dial, the other by a west (almost) dial.
The declination is quite small, but is clearly accounted for in the sundial patterns.

One south dial. The style of the west dial is also visible.

The other south dial.

The sundials were probably added in 1655, when the building was enlarged towards St. Peters Cemetery to get its current appearance.
