Sundial of the month January

Analemmatic sundial of
Brou, France

This very early but well-known analemmatic sundial is in Brou, near Bourg-en-Bresse, Ain, France. It is widely regarded as the progenitor of analemmatic dials.

Recently we received two photographs of the current situation of this sundial. It is still doing well, in spite of the restoration work being done on the church, as the photographs show.

The gnomon and its chain.

There is an equation-of-time loop along the date scale.
This leads some people to believe that the foot of the gnomon should be placed on this loop, but that would not be correct.
It is impossible to apply the equation of time to an analemmatic sundial in this manner.

An additional, earlier, picture shows part of the church.
