On the gatehouse of the old cemetery on Diepenveenseweg in Deventer, there is a wooden turret with four vertical sundials.
One of the dials is marked P 52 G 36 M A 38 G 15 M.
This means that the sundial is made for a latitude of 52 degrees 36 minutes, and that all dial faces decline 38 degrees and 15 minutes from the cardinal directions North, East, South and West, respectively.
It is an interesting puzzle to determine the correct orientation for the dials from their photographs.
As it happens, after several restorations in the course of the years, some sundials were placed back incorrectly.
Fortunately, at the last restoration in 1998, the sundials have all been returned to their respective rightful places.
Using the correct patterns of the four dials, the reader should be able to work out what was wrong before.
