This is what had become of it, the polyhedral sundial of the Slotplaats at Bakkeveen in Friesland.
The 1750 sundial consists of many separate dials.
During the 1787 popular rising, carbine fire caused the stone considerable damage that is still visible.
Some years ago, through the Zonnewijzerkring, the Society for the Preservation of Nature (owner of the Slotplaats and sundial) was warned about the bad state of the sundial.
This year a restoration was carried out, at which our member Frans Maes advised on the gnomonic aspects.
The stone was cleaned, old layers of paint were removed, and broken-off pieces replaced. The whole was newly painted, and new hour lines and numerals applied.
The photographs show the sundial in its new splendour in the (otherwise still to be tidied-up) Slotplaats garden.
