In 1986, a large cylinder sundial was built at the Institute for the Deaf in Sint Michielsgestel, North Brabant.
The sundial is integrated in an earth wall, which in the photograph below looks a bit bare, but was later furnished with planting.
The earth wall has a total breadth of 45 m (49 yd) and the height of the sundial is 5.50 m (18 ft).
Marius van Beek designed the sundial, and he and architect Edo Vos worked out the definitive construction.
The sundial is composed of stone slabs, together weighing about 60 tons (metric) (132 000 lbs). Many of these slabs are part of the earth wall.
The sundial indicates both apparent solar time and civil clock time, although the latter without equation-of-time correction.
On the two sides of the triangular gnomon are date scales according to the signs of the zodiac, one for each half year.
The tip of the shadow of the small gnomon indicates the current date.
