Sundial of the month November

A vertical sundial replica

On the seventeenth-century Johanneskerk in Lichtenvoorde, Gelderland, there was a small sundial of Baumberger sandstone. This is a relatively soft material, and in the course of the years the stone had almost entirely pulverised.
During restoration activities to the church, the sundial was removed. The pictures below show the remnants.
This sundial is beyond repair, and it was decided to make a replica.

The style and the anchors and support for the framework were however still serviceable. They were reused for the replica.

The sundial is a south dial, but the wall to which is was fixed declined six degrees from the south.
For this reason the original stone was thicker on one side than on the other. This was copied in the replica.

First, a model of the replica was presented for approval. Afterwards, "Slotboom Steenhouwers" of Winterswijk cut the sundial from French limestone. The sundial was unveiled on 1 September 2006.
