As early as 1928, fragments of a vertical sundial were found during excavations round the former Sibculo monastery.
These sandstone sundial fragments were in a small Sibculo museum until 1965, when they were transferred to the Twenthe Antiquity Chamber. Unfortunately, the two pieces in the second photograph have since become untraceable.
In spite of its old age, the 5 cm (2 in) thick stone is in very good state, with beautifully sharp lines.
Freddie Ekkel of the Historical Society of Kloosterhaar, near Sibculo, made a preliminary reconstruction drawing of the sundial.
