Storks decided to build their nest on the Ottoland Reformed Church.
To us, a wooden sundial, dated 1734, is as important.
It is doubtful whether the year is correct, but 1734 is the year in which a rebuilding of the church was completed.
There was a partial renovation of the church in 1848, and written sources show the existence of the sundial in 1850.
In 1988, another restoration of the church was completed.
That time, the sundial was taken down and restored as well. The wood was quite weathered, and the paintwork had been better.
The style triangle was not placed correctly over the XII-hour line either.
Jacob Borsje performed, “pro deo”, the restoration of the sundial. The black-and-white photograph shows the result.
The style triangle was replaced with a better-looking one.
Now, after about fifteen years, the paint is starting to bladder, and a new coat would not hurt.
The wood is still in good condition, partly because after the 1988 restoration the sundial was kept free from the wall.
