Sundial of the month September

Youth and Greybeard
Rijksmuseum Amsterdam

"On the southeast [corner] there is a corner Turret, wherein stand two Characters, likewise sculpted by the same Mr. Van Hove; a Youth and a Greybeard, each holding a Sundial, whereon may be read the Hours of the Morning and of the Afternoon."
This text appears in an 1897 book titled "The Amsterdam Rijksmuseum".

The full name of the maker of these statues is Bartholomeus Johannes Wilhelmus Maria van Hove. He was born 17 March 1850 in The Hague, and died 9 February 1914 in Amsterdam.

The sundials were therefore made in the second half of the 19th century.

There are no hour lines, just numerals; a precise time reading is impossible.
