Vertical declining sundial
Churn House, Franeker
To the rear aspect of Churn House in Franeker is a vertical sundial that declines approximately nine degrees south to west.
Supposedly, the sundial is from the 17th century.
The sandstone slab measures 48 x 59 cm. and is decorated with leaf work.
The sundial was restored in 1994.
The hour line pattern is not entirely correct.
On a declining sundial, the line from six to six does not run horizontal.
The line for 6 pm should slope down slightly; the line for 6 am is superfluous.
The pole style should decline slightly to the east, but on the photograph, it seems as if it is right over the noon line.
