Eise Eisinga Planetarium

Eise Eisinga (1744 - 1828) built his world famous planetarium in the living room of his home in Franeker between 1774 and 1781.
The picture below shows the wooden ceiling with the major part of the planetarium.
The planetarium, with numerous extra dials on the walls, is still working.

Eise Eisinga also made a number of sundials. One of these, made in 1806, is on the face of the planetarium house.
In 1984, this date was found on a picture postcard from the early 1900s. Since a restoration of the sundial, it replaces an earlier, incorrect date.

This is a slightly west declining sundial for apparent time. There are numerals from VII in the morning until VI in the afternoon.
Seven date lines corresponding to the signs of the zodiac form a calendar on which to read the date.
