Year 2009

Sundial of the month July

Horizontal equatorial sundial

South Pole

In January 2009, when it was summer in the Antarctic, an expedition of physically handicapped brought a sundial to the South Pole.
This sundial has come about through the Societat Catalana the Gnomònica, Spain.
It is a horizontal sundial – which on the Pole is also an equatorial sundial – with a scale of twenty-four evenly divided hours.

The sundial shows the outlines of Antarctica.
The tip of the iceberg is the gnomon.
