At the entrance to the cemetery in Haren, Groningen, is this large horizontal sundial.
The pole style is a tall caduceus; a herald's staff entwined by two serpents in the form of a double helix, surmounted by wings.
The dial face consists of a grass lawn with Roman hour numerals, made of box, around it in an ellipse.
Because these numerals are really too wide to be used as hour points, a separate box tree with each numeral serves that purpose.
This sundial may have been made after an example from The Dutch Gardener, 1721, by J. Groen. This book contains some designs “To lay Sundials using Box”.
