The sundial shown below is on a wall, declining 9 degrees from the south to the east, of the Zaandam ‘Bull Church’.
The sundial was restored in 1979, using the expert advice of De Zonnewijzerkring.
At the time, the hour lines and furniture were hardly visible, and the entire sundial was calculated and drawn anew.
Presumably, the sundial was originally built around 1700.
The pole style is a singly supported bar with a ball index.
In the photograph, it looks as if the index is far too high, but this is an optical distortion.
On the Sundial, we distinguish the following lines:
Date curves for the signs of the zodiac
Lines for the points of the compass
Curves for the altitude of the sun
The horizon.
The time is read on the scale around the sundial, with numerals from VI hours a.m. until V hours p.m.
Motto: HORA RUIT TEMPUS FUGIT
(The hour is flowing away; time flies)
