The sundial in this photograph is entirely made out of hardwood sheets.
The top edges of the highest wooden sheets are the pole styles, and the centers of the top edges of the other sheets are the hour lines.
There are 24 hour lines – more than is strictly necessary.
The sundial indicates local apparent time.
Each hour sheet is marked with the name of a place where it is true noon at that time.
For example, if, in The Hague, the sundial reads IX hours, it is noon in Kuwait.
Counting from IV hours a.m., the places marked are:
Flores, Jakarta, Sabang, Colombo, Karachi, Koewait, Ankara, Budapest, The Hague (XII), Lisbon, Sandwich Islands, Rio de Janeiro, Paramaribo, Aruba, Chicago, Mexico en San Fransisco.
